Capt. Sherwood Picking was the son of Rear Admiral Henry Forry Picking and Laura Sherwood Picking, a great grandson of John Neal, of Portland, Me., and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1911. He was killed Sept. 1, 1941 in a crash of an RAF Ferry Command plane while it was attempting to land in the British Isles in a dense fog while on his way to take up new duties as assistant naval attacheĢ at the American Embassy in London.
